We will be documenting the expedition throughout, using photography, video and written notes from the river. Some of that material will appear here while the journey is underway. The rest will become part of the longer story that follows.
THE FILM
We plan to create a film from The Long Descent after the expedition.
At this stage, we don't want to define too tightly what that film will be. The river will decide much of the story.
What we do know is that it won't simply be a record of the journey. We want the film to capture what it is actually like to spend several months travelling down the Orange River together — the challenges, the everyday moments, the changing landscape, and the people and places we encounter along the way.
Throughout the expedition, we will be filming with that larger story in mind.
THE BOOK
A book is also planned once the expedition is complete.
The intention is to create a heavily visual record of The Long Descent — combining photographs from the journey with the stories, places and moments that gave it meaning.
Rather than a conventional expedition diary, we imagine something closer to a large-format book that can be returned to years later: part river journey, part photographic record, and part story of two generations travelling together.
AFTER THE DESCENT
The website and Journal will tell the story while The Long Descent is happening.
The film and book will give us the opportunity to step back afterwards and tell that story properly — with the distance, perspective and material that only the completed journey can provide.
